Stuck at work? Without Twitter? Need a place to follow along? Catching up? I’ve got you covered! I’ll be on Twitter as well, but this will be my place for catching up with all of the days action. Tell a friend! Comments welcome.
[7:30] Brutal, brutal luck. Net cord that flopped over on a return for Querrey. Break point. Long rally. Excellent forehand from Pospisil off a slice, ball comes back, panics and drop shots into the net. Quick hold from Querrey. 2-5. Terrible for the Canadian.
[7:23] Zzz. Nothing in this third set. Both content to sit back for the tiebreak. Both guys are total money on serve so far.
[7:11] Great tiebreak from Pospisil. This match may not finish today. Finally takes it on his sixth set point. Querrey really had so many chances to break and should have taken it, but excellent work under pressure from Pospisil. Really believes in his serve, as he should. Confident dude.
[7:04] Tiebreak.
[6:54] Three set points gone for Vashy. Absolutely destroying the second serve of Querrey. Ton of pressure on both guys serves. I dare say Querrey has had the better chance to win this, having had so many set points.
[6:51] Ridiculous winners from Pospisil. Has no business being in this set and now has two set points.
[6:48] Pospisil making things incredibly difficult for himself. Break points against. Again.
[6:41] Back to back breaks for Querrey. Far from done, with Querrey’s track record. But if he keeps serving like he is, that will be two sets for him. 7-5, 1-0.
[5:50] Both players making some in roads on the return game then. Both using the big serve to get out of jail though. Of course.
[5:45] Bit of an opening for Querrey there. Terrible miss. Makes a weird face. Spins the racquet. Ace. Nevermind then. 2-3.
[5:41] The chance of there being any breaks in this match, ever, at all, seems low. Both guys killing it on serve and with zero interest on the return. So far.
[5:39] Pospisil/Querrey time. Great to watch a match on a real outer court. Feels a bit like being there. Quite the atmosphere.
[5:24] Had to step out for a minute…. or an hour. Back now. Waiting on Milos, largely. Things pretty straight forward at the moment.
[4:18] Rafa looks on his way to take the first set in a tiebreak. Of course. Bellucci not exactly a mental giant. Serena on serve.
[4:10] Bit of that slam down time you expect to see in the first several days. Those who should be winning are and the other matches tend to lack any big or exciting names. That’s ok, though.
[3:59] Rafa on serve. Match over? Likely not much left in it now. Two sets to Tsonga. Dimitrov with the first as well, over Anderson. Would be a great win for him.
[3:46] McHale breaks, goes down 0-40, then five straight points to win 10-8 in the fifth. Dayum. Girl has some serious mental strength. Her and Heather Watson have a bit similar games, and have really promising futures. Different, but remind me of one another. Rafa with a break. He’s going to be ok. Jo/Rusty at 4-4. Jo with 14 aces already.
[3:43] Funny game. Jo fails to take a break point. Hewitt really is playing so well, all things considered. Really one of the best counter punchers we’ve seen. Much more “counter punchy” than Murray, in my opinion. Rafa down a double break 4-0. Time to flip that on, then.
[3:37] Jo saves some more break points. Five total now. Big serve is saving him. Nothing wrong with that, really.
[3:31] McHale and Konta grinding in the third. 8-8.
[3:23] Not much up right now if I’m honest. Court 1 trading breaks. Serena on court versus Zahlavova, should roll through that. Nadal/Bellucci on centre.
[3:09] Lord. Flawless from Jo since the break. Literally. Serving huge, really not afraid to come to net when it’s necessary and it’s worked nearly every time. Might have to be more careful against big guys, but it’s fine. He recognizes that he needs to do that, and he definitely does need to do that against the big guys to neutralize things. Good to start now.
[3:05] I think if Tsonga ever won Wimbledon, I would cry. The dude is the complete package on grass. Just doesn’t quite have the mental strength, and was already exhausted last year when he played Djokovic, but he did push him. I see “who will break up the Rafa/Novak domination”. This is your man.
[2:51] Tsonga/Rusty warming up now.
[2:24] Rain delay.
[2:14] Jo looking confident at net. Good sign. Not a bad net player by any means but when he goes on his mental walk abouts, things can get interesting. Long tournament, clearly. But if he can hit big and move in with confidence, watch out.
[2:13] Hewitt returning very well, and very focused early on. So basically looking like Lleyton Hewitt. The dude still has it.
[2:10] Bloody hell, it is a joy to watch Jo just club the crap out of the ball. Feels so confident on grass.
[2:07] Tsonga/Rusty Lawnmower time.
[1:52] Small break until Jo takes on the Rusty Lawnmower. See you then.
[1:50] Schiavone through. Out classed in the first set but turned it up and played some fantastic grass tennis, slicing, keeping the ball low, and pushing it to the backhand. Too many errors from Robson who was nearly perfect through a set and a half.
[1:46] Schiavone to serve for it. Again.
[12:41] Coffee called. Baker through. Great win for him. Robson really grinding, earning a break, on her way to holding. Pressure clearly on Fran now.
[1:19] Kvitova down 3-0 to Akgul. Urgh. Please don’t lose. That would look really, really bad. Schiavone still up a break.
[1:15] Schiavone answered back in the third set, saving three break points. Robson yet to answer that. Franny looking like she’s on her way. Young Brit needs to make a push in one of these return games.
[1:04] Excellent movement by Franny. Pushing to Robson’s backhand and its working wonderfully for her. Break to open.
[12:57] Yup. Only needed on break. Meanwhile Tomic and Goffin about to split sets, Wozniak broken serving for the match, 5-6.
[12:56] Franny serving for the second. Nerves.
[12:47] Break to Schiavone. Now is the big test. It’s all fine and dandy when things are going your way, but how can you respond when they’re not. Laura has to keep going for it.
[12:42] Robson blows 0-40, Fran holds, 3-3. Big game that.
[12:36] Clinical on serve from Robson. How grass court tennis should be. Awesome.
[12:27] Play back on for Robson/Schiavone. Play on for my stomach, as I make breakfast. Get in. Wozniak and Dubois both with the opening sets now. Fantastic. Wozniak up a break at 3-1, too.
[12:15] Hard to know what Robson is feeling right now. Calm on the outside. Likely not on the inside. Really just needs to keep doing what she’s been doing… easier said than done.
[12:13] First set Wozniak. Always done relatively well on grass. Would love to see her string some results together. Lovely. Trainer called for Schiavone. Back pain by the looks.
[12:10] Fantastic stuff from Robson. Disappointing double fault from Schiavone gifts away the first set, 6-2. Robson playing incredibly well, using the forehand and taking care of short balls when necessary. 80% serving and 88% behind the first serve. More or less flawless on serve.
[12:03] Robson calm under 0-30 pressure. Impressive. Really using the grass to her advantage; ball is zipping through the air. 2-5.
[12:01] Lovely start from Robson. Cross court (out wide on the ad court) and forehand cross court to Franny’s backhand is more or less overwhelming her. Pretty awesome to see. Don’t court Fran out though. Ever.
[11:50] Devastating serves out wide from the Brit. Following em up wonderfully. Great grass tennis.
[11:45] Awake. Or something resembling awake. Watching Robson/Schiavone. Mostly because I’m interested in it, and mostly because I cant deal with more than one match at a time right now. Let’s go.
